Tendera

Tendera provides a simple and reliable diagnostic test for periodontitis (loss of teeth)..
Encubator Exit Company from 2002.

Periodontitis (loss of teeth) is a widespread but commonly unknown disease. However, in Sweden, 40% of the adult population is affected and in Europe 10% of the population is totally edentulous (toothless) due to the disease.

For a long time loss of teeth was considered as sign of old age, but today the picture is different. Periodontitis is a disease with many complex parameters, but it can be prevented with the correct treatment.

Despite the fact that the disease is very common, the diagnosing methods used today are very crude. The dental caretaker measures the depth of the gingival pocket between the tooth and the gum, and a pocket depth of >4mm is considered to be unhealthy. However, it is a well known fact that there is no good correlation between pocket depth and gingival health, and this leads to overtreatment in up to 70% of the cases.

Tendera was founded as a company in 2003, based on the research preformed by Maude Wikström and Stefan Renvert. Both are dentists and researchers focusing on the infection and inflammatory process leading to the periodontal state. Tendera will introduce a simple and reliable diagnostic test on the dental market.

Solution

Test for Periodontitis

Tendera’s test is quick and simple. Presence of active inflammatory markers above a defined threshold will be shown as a line in the window of the test within a few minutes after addition of gingival fluid.

The technology behind the test is a so called lateral flow test. The capillary force of the fluid drives mobile antibodies in a complex with the inflammatory antigen over a filter paper. Stationary antibodies towards the same antigen is presented as a line on the paper.

When the mobile antibodies together with the antigen meet the stationary antibodies they form a complex. Gold particles are coupled to the antibodies, and the high concentration of gold in the complex creates a visible line.
